In act III we really see just how manipulative of a person Hamlet is. Due to the fact that he is trying so hard to deceive everyone around him so they don’t see his true plan, it is hard for the reader to know his true feelings at some points. One thing that is hard to find his true feelings with is how he feels towards Ophelia. He keeps going back-and-forth with his actions towards her as to loving her and not loving her. When he is talking to her while Polonius is watching, he claims to not have loved her, but when they are at the play, he keeps making jokes to her. Another way we see how manipulative Hamlet is, is by how closely the play reenacts what happened to Hamlet’s father, and how it foreshadows what Hamlet is planning to do to his uncle. What is manipulative about this is that it is his way of finding out if Claudius really did kill Hamlet Sr. When Claudius reacts so strongly during the play Hamlet’s assumptions are confirmed.
