I remember us discussing the question whether or not Hamlet really had any true feelings or affection for Ophelia. My answer to that question would most certainly be yes. Okay yes, Hamlet did write that amazing love letter for her and came to her inappropriately half dressed, but that was all just an act towards his plan to show everyone he is crazy (pg45. -46, ln. 77-84). And yes, in the beginning of Act III he does break her poor little heart into millions of pieces, and basically treat her like absolute trash (pg. 79, ln. 117-119). But again, this is all towards his act to show people how crazy he is.
Before any of the insane craziness plan was plotted, Hamlet did express feelings of affection towards Ophelia. He had expressed his love to her before (pg. 26, ln. 99). I think that proves that he really did care about her. He had no reason, at this point of the story, to pretend how he felt. Everything he was doing and saying toward her had to be genuine.
