I found it very interesting that when the Messenger came with news of Laertes returning to Denmark that there were people chanting for Laertes to be king (pg. 130 line 106). Even though the people who chant for Laertes to be king are followers of him it still could make a reader wonder if the people of Denmark want or like Claudius to be their king. There has been no mention within the story that they dislike Claudius as their king, but likewise there has been no mention that they like Claudius as their king. It is known that the people of Denmark do love Prince Hamlet when Claudius says, “He’s loved of the distracted multitude” (pg. 118 line 4). The people of Denmark may have wanted to have Hamlet be their next king instead of Claudius. Claudius is more of a political leader while Hamlet is more like his father who was a warrior driven king. If the people of Denmark had their choice Hamlet would probably be king now or would be king as soon as he became of age. Claudius feels the throne is being threatened, and it is probably one of the reasons why he is sending Hamlet to be killed in England. It is safe to say that the people of Denmark would rather see Hamlet as their king. The chanting of Laertes followers brings this thought to the reader.
