This novel, The Grapes of Wrath, can easily and strongly be interpreted with a historical/topical approach. As it strongly relates with its time period, which is the 1930's during such events as the Dust Bowl, The Great Depression, and the aftermath of the Roaring Twenties, Steinbeck reflect on the conditions of the country. He mainly focuses the novel on the poorer farmers and country folks that had been evicted from their farms since they couldn't pay their rent, which was due to the inability to produce crops due to the extreme drought that was plaguing the plains states. Steinbeck even tries to display how the banks played such a huge role in turning a natural disaster (The Dust Bowl), into an economic disaster, by evicting the families from their homes, creating such a poverty level that took over a decade in many cases to fully recover from. He uses the Joad family as an example of the typical Oklahoma farming family to show just how tragic the event was, even to the hardest working families, who spent day after day simply trying to find a days work to pay for food. While he does express his own views of the time period, having lived through the time, he really does focus on the reality of the lives lived throughout the time, to try to help our country to learn from its past horrors, to hopefully never return to that again.
