Ethan Frome was the main character in the novel, Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton. Ethan was being troubled by a major moral question. He was in love with the housekeeper, not his wife. His wife, Zeena, was "ill" as she called it but really she just had asthma. Ethan was the only income for his wife and if he were to leave her then she would be completely unable to support herself. Ethan was truly in love with Mattie, the housekeeper. He wanted more than anything to be with her, not his wife. The big moral question for Ethan was whether he was going to stay and take care of his wife or if he was going to follow his heart and run away with Mattie. In the end he attempts to end his and Mattie's lives, but he fails. He ends up getting both of his wishes because he gets to stay with Mattie after the accident but Zeena was taking care of them.

Detailed response! You did a good job of explaining how this novel can be read with a Moral/Intellectual perspective. Keep up the good work.
