In the work of literature Things Fall Apart a reader could take a moral/intellectual approach while reading. Society always tries to make people conform to what they want. Many people fall into conformity and follow what others want them to believe. In doing that it basically forces people to live a lie. Okankwo does not know whether he should follow his people or fight for what he believes is right.
There is a huge problem of which religion to follow within the tribe Okankwo is a part of. This is also a big problem in society today. Religion is a very touchy subject and can cause many people to divide. When the Christians come to Africa to spread their religion Okankwo’s tribe is overwhelmed by the word of God brought by the Christians. Okankwo still believes in the old religion the tribe which they followed by heart, but when the people of the tribe begin to follow the Christians it becomes hard for him to continue and fight for what he believes in. Okankwo must chose between what he believes is right and what others believe is right. Society is once again trying to force someone to believe what they want them to. The people understand that their old religion is the basis of their life, but they are swept by the newness and intriguing factor of Christianity. While on the other hand Okankwo thinks the old religion is still the best and that Christianity is just complete chaos and it will not work for the people.
Ultimately Okankwo chooses to continue to follow the old religion and defy what society and conformity. He knows it will be a battle to fight for the old religion but he goes for it anyways. In the end he loses the fight because of a lack of supporters. That is how many people lose a fight because they do not have help from others to fight the opposition He is basically driven to the point of insanity because of the constant pressure put on by the Christians and others from the tribe. They try to force him to be something he is not and something he does not want to believe in. Okankwo is in a spot where he is pretty much forced to believe what the Christians believe or die.
This just goes to show that people should follow what they believe in no matter how bleak it looks. In doing what Okankwo did one may die but it would be worth it to die for what you believe in. Instead of being stuck in a world believing something he did not, Okankwo decided to stick up for what he believed in. He chose to be the person he wanted to be and not conform to what others around him wanted to be.
