In the book, The Color Purple, is looked at through a feminist criticism approach. The main character Celia is a subordinate character while her husband Mr._ is dominant character. This shows the feminist approach because throughout literature the female is excepted to follow her husband or father's orders without questioning anything like a machine. A female and a machine are alike because they are expected to follow orders and not complain or have show emotions. Celia does this when she is told by her father to married Mr._ and she does even when she does not like this. Also Celia is expected to clean the house and take care of the children when she is married to Mr._ and she does this without complaining. Society back then determine that a women role is to be subordinate to her husband or father and in the book, The Color Purple, Celia shows this and how she decided to not follow how society's expectations of a female.

Great points, Jessica. Celia is treated as a machine at times. Keep in mind that "The Color Purple" or any book, does not have to be looked at through a certain lens. As long as you back up your points, like you did, you will be correct. In other words, it MAY be looked at through a feminist approach.
