In Act 1 Hamlet is portrayed as someone that does not trust or can be trusted easily. A whole scene is dedicated to Laretes and Polonius telling Ophelia not to trust Hamlet. They tell her that Hamlets intentions may be something other than her love. That scene shows that Hamlet is not someone that should be trusted easily. Similarly in scene five of act one Hamlet inability to trust those closest to him is evident. After talking with the Ghost Hamlet reveals to his friends that he has a secret. They want to be told and swear to never tell. It takes much convincing that they will not tell and an oath before Hamlet feels he is able to trust Horatio the one closest to him at that moment. Horatio just wants to help his friend but Hamlet just wants to enact his revenge.

(Extra Credit) Hamlet is set up as an untrustworthy character, yet he has done nothing that would earn him that label. I believe that the character in the play have said that he is untrustworthy so he does not gain more power. They do not want him to interfere with the plans that they have. Polonius is Claudius's friend so Polonius would have good reason not to have his daughter falling in love with Hamlet. They are trying to keep Hamlet out of power and having his daughter involved with him would only confuse the plan. Hamlet is one of the only characters that has not done something deceitful and misleading. He is hesitant to trust others because he is afraid that they will go against him, as many others have. Hamlet is unrightfully labeled as "untrustworthy" in this play.
