My reaction to this section was bewilderment on what it is that Polonious and Laertes have against Hamlet. I think that since Hamlet is the prince of Denmark, the other two have something planned against him. My prediction is that they have a plan set in order to make Laertes king. They don't want Ophelia to become involved with Hamlet because they don't want to hurt her in the process of hurting Hamlet. This of course is just my prediction but I think something is very suspicious about the way Polonious talked about Hamlet to Ophelia.

I agree with your prediction that Polonious and Laertes are plotting something against Hamlet. It was very suspicious how they were almost warning Ophelia against getting any closer to Hamlet. However, i don't think that they truly had her best interests at heart. I think they mainly just wanted to keep her out of the way for what they may be plotting against Hamlet. They may be worried that she would not be trust worthy and might learn too much and tell Hamlet. But it is also possible that they do have her best interests in mind and just dont want her to get hurt, seeing as how angry Hamlet is at this point in the play. In his soliloquy on page 15, it shows how angry he is at this point in the novel. So maybe they just dont want her to get hurt by him.

I think that you are right in a way about Polonious and Laertes having something against Hamlet. In the book when they tell Ophelia not to be around Hamlet or trust him in anyway, makes them out to be a little suspicious. I think that they want to have minimal interaction with hamlet but I do not think that they have a plot to get rid of hamlet from his future throne and to put Laertes in his place.

(Extra Credit) I agree with you, sort of. Laertes and Polonius are plotting something against Hamlet I completely agree. It has be stated before that she is very naive . So wouldn't they want to use it to their own advantage? They could marry her off to him and she can become somewhat of a spy. She seems like she wouldn't be very dishonest with them. They could easily trick her into something like that. Maybe they want her not to associate with Hamlet for other reasons. Maybe he doesn't want his little girl to date an 'idiot'

I agree with your opinion. I don't believe they should be telling Ophelia all these things about Hamlet just because they don't like him. In scene three, lines 101-103, Polonius is basically trying to tell Ophelia that Hamlet is not honest and she shouldn't trust him. They should just let Ophelia make her own decisions. I don't really understand what they have against Hamlet, I agree with your opinion on them trying to make Laertes king, that makes sense.

For Extra Credit: I disagree with this prediction because I believe Hamlet is the next up and coming king. I believe this because King Claudius says, "You (Hamlet) are the most immediate to our throne.." (Line 109. Scene 2). Once King Claudius dies, Hamlet will be the next king. Even if Hamlet was killed, Laertes has no family connection to Gertrude or the former King Hamlet. I think Laertes and Polonius warned Ophelia to not be with Hamlet in order for her to not get hurt.
