At the end of this act one I wondered, why did Claudius kill Hamlet Sr.? I know people kill for many reasons, whether it be for love, power, hatred or money, but I wondered still what Claudius's true intentions were. Did he want only the power or did he love Hamlets mother? In my opinion I think it was for the power to control the country of Denmark but why would he want to control a country in times of war. I also think Claudius loved Hamlets mom but the job of being king over Denmark came with the the marriage of Hamlets mom.

I totally agree with you Andrew. Power can make a man go crazy. Just like the questions we answered with our own opinions before we read Hamlet stated. Power can easily corrupt a mans mind. And it can easily make a man do crazy things to obtain such power. Being the Dane is the highest power a man of Denmark can have. So to me it seems that Claudius' reason for murdering his brother Hamlet Sr. was to obtain great power.

Andrew, I like this reflection about questioning why Claudius killed Hamlet Sr. It is very interesting to think why he would go to such lengths to kill his brother. What were his true intentions? Claudius probably wanted to ultimately destroy any reputation Hamlet Jr. had of ever being king. Claudius was motivated to destroy any chance for Hamlet to ever be king, by making him so made that he would want to be.

(Extra Credit) I also questioned why Claudius killed Hamlet Sr. I believe that Claudius was motivated by greed and envy. He wanted the power of being King to himself, and with Hamlet Sr. dead he could work toward having complete control. To many, the appeal of being all powerful often leads to many wrongdoings. People's ideas of what is right are clouded by the lust for power. This all consuming desire to be powerful led Claudius to murder. He ultimately married Gertrude to become King. I wondered whether or not Gertrude knew Claudius's plan before they married. If she did know she could have also been preserving the power she had held with Hamlet Sr. The quest for power seems to be a recurring theme within this play.
