In this act, Hamlet has successfully convinced most people around him that he is insane. His plan began with tricking Polonius, who he knew was bound to tell his uncle. This was the easiest way for Hamlet to call attention to his newfound state of mind. To trick Polonius, Hamlet chose to mess with Ophelia. Through Ophelia, he knew Polonius would soon assume his love for her was so strong that he was mad without her. And because of all of his ploys with her, Hamlet succeeds in portraying himself in that manner. The basis for his plan, which proved ingenious, was to allow him more freedoms. If he was to voice his opinion in a "sane" state of mind, he would more than likely be punished. So with this new alter ego, he is allowing himself freedom to speak his mind when he otherwise could not. For example, in his conversation with Polonius, he calls him a fishmonger (173-174). This insult was said only because Polonius already thought Hamelt wasn't right in the head. Another ploy Hamlet was about to use were the Players. His plan to use them to see if the new King would hesitate, was also smart. I think that when the new King sees this play he will begin to sweat. Then all of the unraveling will begin!
